What is Hacking(White Hat,Black Hat, Gray Hat)

When we listen hacking word it suddenly came in our mind about an expert computer programmer who can enter in to any person computer without any permission by bypass the security barrier and steal the important data from that computer an also can access the other computer data which are connected to the same network.But the reality is totally different and opposite of this fact, we can see bad and good peoples every where in the world. Just like this all the hackers are not bad and hackers are divided in to different categories according to their properties.

Categories of Hackers

There are three categories of hackers

Black Hat Hackers
White Hat Hackers
Gray Hat Hackers

May be you are thinking why hackers are so colorful regarding to their categories names, colorful hat word came in hacking from Hollywood old black and white movies. In old Hollywood movies the hero of the movie always shown in white hat while villain of the movies wearing Black hat.So that people can easily understand the roles of hero and villain in any movie.

So hackers are divided in three categories as described above.

(1) Black Hat Hackers

Those computer programmer or experts who can enters in to the any computer or computer network without any permission and breaking the security with bad purpose. Black hat hacker always try to harm the peoples by entering in to their computer by illegally with some hidden commands. These hackers main purposes are

Try to damage the computer system
Try to damage the network
Try to steal the data
Breaking password or credit card number

These hackers just want to show their expertness to other peoples for their popularity, Richard Instalment use a new term in Black hat hacking Cracker. Cracker word is used in Black hat hacking , majority of peoples consider the hacker and cracker are same but cracker word is used in as cracker in Black hat hacking.

There are black hat and white hat terms are used in hacking while cracker terminology is just used in black hat hacking.There are two categories of peoples in black hat hacking which are

(a)Advance programmers and social Engineers

These peoples are highly experienced and experts in advance programming and social engineering, these peoples build their own software or hardware to breaking the system security and entering in to any computer system. We can say that these peoples are highly experts and having much abilities in computer programming and social engineering.

(b)Not Programmer(Novice)

These peoples don't know any thing about computer programming or social engineering but they used some automated tools to do cracking which are developed by other computer experts. majority of these peoples don't know about the working of these automated cracking tools.These people just take these tools and run these tools to start cracking in to any computer system or network security.So say these peoples are not called hackers but they called script kiddies.

Some Famous Black Hat Hackers

This man is known as the earliest Cracker, Mark Zbikowski cracked the Viana State University Machine Gun Terminal Service which was made in Main Frame computer. After this according to Mark Zbikowski when he tried to understand the university owner about their security holes then university warn him that if he will not accept job in their university the will do actions against him according to the law.He accepted the university job to stay safe from any legal action against him by law. He also did job in Microsoft as Architect, he is known as the earliest worker of Microsoft.

Jonathan James is also known as comrade , he intercepted the thousands of messages about atomic activities of american defense department.

When Jonathan James sent to jail after accused he was just 16 years of old. He is younger cyber criminal in the history who is accused and punished by cyber court as criminal.

Mark Abene is also known as Phiber Optik , he was belonged to Newyark , Mark Abene was popular because he enforced the thousands of young american youths to crack the american tele- communication system.

He was also the one founder of Master of Deception group, this group was so popular in cracking of tele-communication system.The member of this group was experts in cracking of DEC severs.

(2) White Hat Hackers

White hackers are known as good peoples, these peoples do not violate any rule or regulations but these peoples do work under the limits of law.These peoples enter in to the system according to limits and tell the peoples about their system security holes or remove that security holes from the system or server.

The purpose of these activities of White hat hackers are just for the security improvement, majority of these peoples are employee of computer security companies, these are also called sneakers and their team or group is called tiger team.

The main difference between white hat hackers and black hat hackers is that white hat hackers always try to make the security system better and better while black hat hackers always try to break the security for their bad purposes but black hat hackers always try to make their own system security better.

Microsoft Windows Operating System sales with cryptography libraries but when this operating system is sale outside the america then these cryptography libraries becomes useless because operating system can not load these libraries.This system only runs those libraries which are signed by Microsoft , Microsoft is bounded that it has to take permission from American Government before signing any library to the outside of america, due to this america has limited these cryptography libraries in just america.

But the hackers from outside america has find out a way to load these libraries in their operating which are not signed by america. Although this activity looks like bad but many hacking communities called it white hacking because in this way cryptography will spread in to the whole world.

Today's world search engines are also performing white hat and black hat activities, in search engine black hat activity is called spamdexing because when somebody search for any thing in search engine the result will be redirect to specific website.

(3) Gray Hat Hackers

Gray hat hackers are known as expert hackers in computer community who work some time legally (according to law) and some time do work illegally ( violate the law). Majority of gray hat hackers do not want to harm any system or server but some time the can do any illegal work during their work.

Gray hat hackers is the intermediate type of hackers which lies between the black hat hackers and white hat hackers. Majority of gray hat hackers when enters in to the system they do not harm the system but just leave their names in the system.

Apache Hacked By Gray Hat Hackers in 2004

In 2004 some gray hat hackers hacked the apache.org server but the did not harm the server,they did not leave any virus, the did not warn Apache employees but hey just inform Apache peoples to their security holes.
